Of the canine persuasion.

With all of the fireworks blaring, it is now that time of year when I desperately wish that my dog Marble would fall into a deep, restful hibernation until the beginning of August. As an extra treat, last night we had thunder and lightning, 3 a.m. and so loud it sounded like it was directly over our house. Poor girl, the vet's drugs can only do so much and she is kind of hungover today.

A while back I stumbled on this outstanding vintage photography blog, Shorpy, and among their archives I fell in love with these vintage dog pictures from their edited galleries.  Sure, there is a gallery of cat photos too, but I am biased!

The photo at the top reminds me of Institute:Dateline Kennel. A great slideshow of newspaper photographs of canines set to the humorous commentary of James Lileks. For example, a description with a picture of two Chinese Crested dogs:
"The one on the left looks like it had a giraffe for a mother and a Scottish Furby for a father; the one on the right has the expression of a dog shaved regularly for punishment. Maybe not; I have also seen that expression in church on bored old men, looking up at the stained-glass window for the 900th Sunday, thinking about coffee."

Make sure you check out all the other nooks and crannies at Lileks, including the Institute of Official Cheer - home of The Gallery of Regrettable Food and The Orphanage of Cast-Off Mascots, among others.

You mentioned two of my favorite things! I posted about Shorpy when I began my blog-because I really wanted the world to know about it! And James Lileks? Well lets just say I ADORE him!!!!! Love the site- and will be back! (esp. since we have similar tastes!)

Our poor dogs. The next few months have its nights ot torture that is for sure. Zephyr did remarkable well last night, but that was because I was sitting right next to him giving him reassurance. We live near a university staduim and our minor league baseball field that have fireworks all July. We celebrate the twenty fourth of july with fireworks as well. Good luck with Marble.

I love the photos, when I have more time, I will take a look at them.
Happy Fourth!
