Behold - Anatomy

I found this anatomy chart about 15 years ago, after we moved back to Portland. Although it isn't in the best condition, I love it - besides it was crazy cheap. I found it at a big rummage sale and made a point of going back to that sale annually, each time finding at least one thing that really made my heart patter, until it became overpriced and kind of ordinary. {I am talking to you Catlin Gabel}

I especially like the detail.

We have it hanging in our kitchen since we have very few large walls without windows or paneling. When M was little he started to learn some of the anatomical names.  I asked C what some of the things on the chart were, this was his object association:

 

It cracked me up when he said "Macaron" - we have obviously been here before. Perhaps we are what we eat.

I am looking forward to Coraline. Laika, who created the film, is based here in town. The director also directed A Nightmare Before Christmas. A few of my friends worked on that movie and it was neat to see how everything was created, I can imagine the world of Coraline would be equally fascinating.

 On the Coraline site, you can view the trailer. Even more fun - you can create your own flower. I like it when the petals drop.

Ten!

Ten years and one day ago,  I embarked on this thing called parenthood.

What a wonderful, challenging, crazy, gratifying, heart-booming, enlightening, happy, maddening,  love-overload endeavour.

It is cliché - but it goes by so quick.

Of course, we have no idea, and such is the risk and adventure of parenthood. But these risks and these sacrifices, I think, are a fundamental component of this unique experience that has given me more insight and understanding into other human beings than any other of my life. And all of this is to say thank God we chose to have children. Thank God for those endless, sleepless nights. Because I now know what I know. Because raising Leta more than anything else in my life has helped me piece together the puzzle of what it means to be human. I understand my own childhood so much better, understand my own parents so much better, and there is so much about myself that I have tried to improve that I didn't know I needed to improve until I was reduced to a late night pair of pacing legs.

Today - I feel pride pushing at my insides. Inspiration and hope - I feel like our country is just that much closer to owning, fulfilling our true potential. Ready to roll up our sleeves.

Also, thankful for waterproof mascara.

We watched and celebrated with a full crowd at a theater down the street. How did you take in this day?
