for this Halloween

We escorted Merlin and Captain Hook through the neighborhood. They were calling for rain, but we seriously lucked out with the weather - especially because part of C's Hook costume is made with coffee filters. M's Merlin costume was great at keeping him warm, although he later ditched the felt beard.

You night remember that C has a real sweet tooth, needless to say he was ecstatic about going door to door and asking for candy - both of them 'shopping' the bowls for their favorites, despite our reminders not to. However, they both told us they were done for the night and we skipped a block or two on the way home.

 

We let them have a couple of pieces that night and then they have the choice of keeping the candy or picking out a dozen pieces {to be doled out} and trading the rest in for a small toy. Do any of you put any limits on the candy for your kids?

And yes, success. Only one piece on Saturday and one piece on Sunday and the plan is no more - I will miss it.

Can you guess what C is going to be for Halloween? The boys had great fun at a Halloween party this past weekend, it was good for me - it meant I wasn't finishing their costumes on Halloween morning.

C has a throat thing going on - he feels fine though. Is it wrong to be amused by it? I asked him how much he was looking forward to Halloween...

M's movie review

A few weeks back, we took M to see the new H. Potter movie. Our rule with that series has been that after he reads the book he can see the movie. Sitting next to me during the film, he certainly seemed to enjoy it. This, however, was his movie review for his aunt:

I had no idea that the movie was burdening his heart and soul. Perhaps M dabbles in hyperbole?

 

a zoo out there

We had a nice time yesterday at the zoo*. The polar bear was very entertaining.  He fetched his drum from the water and rolled it up next to the rock, he would bounce a bit on it with his front paws and then wait for the dent to pop back to normal.

We always end our visit with a ride on the train, I remember loving it as a kid. In summer it takes the long route out of the zoo and into the forest above the city.

* my kids didn't start bickering until we hit the grocery store afterward - a small victory!

Natural born architect

 

I found this vintage wood molecule building set a while ago. I like the colors and the kids like building with it.
Last week, this favorite toy of ours inspired me to get some toothpicks and mini marshmallows so we could build some geometric models.

 Being summer and hot, the little marshmallows were stuck together in constellations. C selflessly took on the task of separating them: 'this looks sticky, I'll take care of it' {munch}, 'this one is broke' {munch}, 'these are all stuck together, I'll take care of them' {munch the whole blob}.

Meanwhile, M and I started building.

Knowing how much C loves sweets, I asked him to stop eating and start building before the whole bag was gone. Surprisingly, he obliged.

 He took two toothpicks in one hand and jammed a row of three marshmallows on top of them. He showed me his creation - " See, I built a popsicle!" {Munch.}

You can never turn your back on a four year old boy.

He really likes reading about cars

M {flipping through an old Martha magazine, landing on a car ad} -Mama, I have read that many Jaguar enthusiasts think that this model is the worst. With the trapezoidal headlights and the...not having the trademark grill...it is a car fit for a hag.

What can you even say in response to that, besides chuckle and say I love you?
