The video's reference to picking and choosing relates to a great book I read a while back, A.J. Jacob's The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible. It is incredible.
The author, a self professed agnostic, dives "in headfirst
and attempt{s} to obey the Bible as literally as possible for one full
year. He vows to follow the Ten Commandments. To be fruitful and
multiply. To love his neighbor. But also to obey the hundreds of less
publicized rules: to avoid wearing clothes made of mixed fibers; to
play a ten-string harp; to stone adulterers."
By the end of the book, he is profoundly changed by the experience. I heard about the book when it was first published from an interview of Jacobs on NPR - listen here { it explains the 'stoning'}.
Can you imagine what that year would be like?
